Xipe & Totec

2017-2019 CDMX

This project examines the intricate relationship between maize, a staple of Mexican cuisine and a ceremonial symbol of pre-Hispanic Mexico; the history of Xipe Totec, the deity of life, death, resurrection, and agriculture.

Our collection delves into the symbolism of maize as a cultural entity, juxtaposed with the flayed skin of Xipe Totec, "our flayed lord," who, according to legend, skinned himself to nourish humanity for the first time. This collection highlights the intersection of these symbols and histories of sacrifice and nourishment, showcasing the interplay between ancient traditions and modern, often superficial objects.
